Sales Tax Autofile is the sales tax autofiling service provided by Sidr Tax. We use the sales tax reports generated from your Shopify transactions and file the state returns for you. Enroll in each state separately, and rest assured that your sales tax filing will happen on time.

Activate Sales Tax Autofile

First, go to the Sidr Tax Autofile page. If this is the first time you access the Sales Tax Autofile feature, you need to activate it first. The autofile feature is available to all plans. The feature activation requires authorization to charge a maximum of $1000 monthly. This is not an estimate of how much you will pay. The cost of autofiling varies from $35 to $45 per file depending on your plan, and you will only be charged after a successful file. The increased maximum charge is to ensure that Sidr Tax can continue to file for you if the number of your autofiling states increases.

Why do you need to register?

Your business is required to collect and file sales tax once you reach the Nexus status in a state. Each state has different requirements for reaching the Nexus status. To understand those requirements, you can visit this help article here.

Sales Tax Reports

The sales tax reports are the bread and butter of Sidr Tax, and you can directly use the values in the report to fill out your state sales tax forms. Now let's break down a sales tax report, and see how it helps with your tax filing.

Sidr Tax report accurately reflects tax collected by Shopify on your behalf. However, the only exception is Returned Taxable Merchandise.

Tax report filters

On the top, you can see 4 filters, and you can use them to get the exact report you need to file. The filters include:

Shop filter: If you have multiple shops, use this filter to choose the shop.
State filter: Select the state to file. If you need to figure out which state you need to file, you can get a holistic view on the summary page.
Time range filter: Different states have different filing schedules. Using the time range filter to choose between monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, and annually.
Start month filter: Select the month your selected time range begins. For example, if you want a Q3 report, then you will select quarterly and July.

We match your sales records against the qualification rules of each state, and let you know when you are approaching economic nexus status ahead of time.

How to use the Economic Nexus Dashboard

Determine Economic Nexus

The requirements can be very different for each state when deciding whether you have Economic Nexus status. However, they are usually decided by a few key factors.

Physical presence
Number of orders
Sales amount
Whether to include exempted sales
Whether to include wholesale
The lookback period determines whether a sale should be included in the calculation.

In the summary section, you can see all US states that require sales tax collection are split into three groups.

For Nexus states managed by Sidr Tax Autofile, we keep a history of all the filing records for you. You can access the history on this page.

Filing period

This is the time period that Sidr Tax filed for you. There are a few different kinds:

2024 Jan: This is a monthly filing for Jan.
2024 Q1: This is a quarterly filing for the first quarter.
2024 H1: This is a semi-annual filing for the first half of the year.
2024 Annual: This is an annual filing for 2024.

Autofile Status

Upcoming: Sidr Tax will start working on this filing period soon.
In progress: Sidr Tax is currently working on filing the current period.
Filed: The current filing period has been filed to the State Department of Revenue.
Filed by client: The current filing was done by you. There will be no charge.
Paid: The current filing period has been filed and paid to the State Department of Revenue.
Not required: The current filing period is not required. This can happen when there is a schedule change, or if the schedule was previously misconfigured and we corrected it for you.
Missing info: Sidr Tax cannot complete the filing due to missing info. We usually reach out to you as soon as we find missing info.
